Cabo Blanco National Park
The reserve is named after the island Cabo Blanco, located on the reserve's southern tip. Cabo Blanco is an important seabird sanctuary. The amount of bird life matches the wildlife found under water. 1,788 hectares of ocean belong to the Cabo Blanco nature reserve, and a wide variety of animals call the park home. You can venture the 2 km from our hotel into the national park, and explore the walking trails unguided, or for a more educational experience, take a guide with you and learn about the flora and fauna of Costa Ricas first National Park.
In pre-Columbian times the Indians used the island as a burial ground and funerals are still held there today. At low tide a pathway over the rocks makes it possible to walk to the island to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. if guests would like to visit the island other times than low tide, Calala Beach Lodge has a kayak for rent on site. The reef on the extreme tip of the Island is a great spot for snorkeling, and the island boasts the only sandy beach in Cabuya.
The waterfalls are a highlight feature of Montezuma, consisting of three cascades, located each on top of the other. The highest and most beautiful one is the lowest waterfall. A short twenty minute walk from the parking lot in Montezuma leads you up the river to the beautiful falls.
